Keeping to a proper examination and vaccination schedule can keep your pet healthy and healthy. It can also save you money by avoiding costly treatments down the road.
Pet Examinations at Live Oak Animal Hospital
Pets need regular examinations even when they are healthy. Puppies and kittens need regular wellness checks every few months. Your pet can then get a yearly exam as they age, switching to twice yearly as they become elderly.
During a typical physical exam, our veterinarians will observe how your pet stands and walks. They will also check alertness, body weight, and skin and coat. Much of the rest of the examination consists of looking for problems in the eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and teeth. Catching problems in these areas early can prevent more significant health issues.
Your veterinarian will also feel parts of your pet’s body, such as the abdomen and lymph nodes, to check for pain or swelling. If necessary, they will let you know if they recommend testing.
Vaccinations at Live Oak Animal Hospital
Puppies and kittens need shots every 3-4 weeks until they reach about 12 to 16 months old. Your pet will then need vaccine boosters every few years according to a schedule set by your veterinarian. There are core vaccines for most dogs and cats, and your veterinarian may recommend others in special cases. Core vaccines include:
Dogs:
- Canine parvovirus
- Distemper
- Canine hepatitis
- Rabies
Cats:
- Feline distemper
- Feline calicivirus
- Feline herpesvirus Type I
- Rabies
It is essential that you stick to the schedule that your veterinarian suggests. Long gaps between vaccinations give animal diseases a window of opportunity to make your beloved companion ill.
